Big Science Sweden Steering Committee goes underground at CERN

“Important to experience, at first hand, the things you work with.” A visit to CERN gave the Big Science Sweden Steering Committee an insight into the fantastic research conducted in the ATLAS Experiment.

Catarina Sahlberg, Director Big Science Sweden.

Big Science Sweden works closely with CERN, and regularly takes Swedish companies to the facility to make the contacts that can lead to new business. At the end of January, it was the Steering Committee’s turn. The visit included going 80 metres underground, where the committee members learned more about the ATLAS Experiment, the largest detector ever constructed for a particle collider.

Anne Norén, Vice-President Research and Business Development at RISE, took part in the visit.

“It was inspiring to meet the scientists who are so passionate about finding out more about the universe, and to take the lift down and see this fantastic experiment,” she said.

Catarina Sahlberg, Director Big Science Sweden, emphasises the importance of being able to visit the research organisations in person and strengthen the Big Science network.

“Our steering committee is very engaged, and actively follows our work. The members appreciate being able to learn more about the facilities and the opportunities they offer for Swedish industry.”
