RISE continues to deliver to ITER

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, together with the company Electric Drive Technology (EDT), will build equipment and develop methods to help the ITER Organisation explore how electric motors and frequency converters work in the strong magnetic fields surrounding the experimental fusion reactor.

Joni Klüss, senior researcher in high voltage at RISE and project manager.

“This is the third ITER contract we at RISE have won through an open procurement process. RISE leads a consortium alongside EDT, where our main contribution is our technical expertise in power electronics and strong magnetic fields and benefiting from our experience in previous ITER projects,” says Joni Klüss, senior researcher in high voltage at RISE and project manager.

EDT expertise in electric motors

EDT, based in Kungälv, is an SME specialising in electric drive technology, with more than 30 years of experience and extensive resources in the field.

Test rig and test methods

A test rig and test methods will be developed and delivered to ITER. The equipment and methods will be used to assess how critical components function under the influence of strong magnetic fields at an existing magnetic field test facility at ITER.

“We will also provide technical support and analyse test results throughout the two-year duration of the project,” says Joni Klüss.
