Shared knowledge at Focused Technical Workshop: Materials

At a half-day session in September, around 20 academic researchers and representatives from member companies gathered to learn more about materials science.

Fredrik Engelmark from Big Science Sweden , Daniel Primetzhofer, Head of Department at the Tandem Laboratory, Uppsala University, and Ernesto Gutierrez, Big Science Sweden and UU Innovation.

Fredrik Engelmark from Big Science Sweden and ILO for CERN opened the session, and Ernesto Gutierrez, Big Science Sweden and UU Innovation, gave a presentation on the ÅMA Ångström Materials Academy and its work.

Daniel Primetzhofer, Head of Department at the Tandem Laboratory, Uppsala University, held an interesting presentation on the national research infrastructure for world leading materials analysis.

Research conducted at the Tandem Laboratory includes advanced ion beam-based material analysis and material modification in a broad range of research fields, from fundamental research in the natural sciences to practical applications for industry and society.

Daniel Primetzhofer talked about one particular study carried out at the facility – an in-situ study of ion intercalation in electrochromic film. In brief, the Tandem Laboratory has developed a method for in-operando depth profiling of the Li-inventory in lithium thin film batteries. The method can be used to study movements of lithium ions between different battery materials while charging or discharging the stack.

Fredrik Engelmark: “Thank you to everyone who participated and shared knowledge on the current state of materials research, and collaboration opportunities. The workshop attracted an exciting group of both academic researchers and company representatives. We hope to see at least some of the participants again at the AIMday Materials 2020, which will be held at the Ångström Laboratory on 22 October.”

After the meeting, a number of 1-to-1 meetings were held to enable further contacts between the participants.
