Strengthening collaboration between Sweden, FAIR, and GSI

Big Science Sweden recently visited the FAIR and GSI accelerator facilities in Germany. The delegation included team members, the Steering Committee, and representatives from the Swedish division of GE Healthcare. Sweden has a strong collaboration with FAIR and is actively contributing to the development of the facility.

“I am extremely delighted with Big Science Sweden’s decision to choose FAIR/GSI as the location for their Steering Committee meeting,” explained Thomas Nilsson as he guided the group around.

FAIR

Thomas Nilsson, Scientific Managing Director at GSI and FAIR, opened the visit, joined by Katharina Stummeyer, Administrative Managing Director, and Jörg Blaurock, Technical Managing Director.

“The visit highlights Sweden’s vital role and continued interest in FAIR’s scientific and technological endeavours. Through contributions to experimental and accelerator components, Sweden continues to push the boundaries of fundamental research, strengthening international collaboration and shaping the future of scientific discovery,” said Thomas Nilsson.

A fantastic experience

Björn Ekelund (Ericsson Group), Chair of the Steering Committee, shared his impressions:

“As Chair of Big Science Sweden, I am proud of the components, knowledge and expertise that Swedish researchers and companies have contributed to the FAIR project thus far. I hope that we can strengthen our collaboration with both FAIR and GSI, to open up further exciting opportunities for Swedish science and industry.”

Knowledge Transfer

The Swedish delegation also included representatives from GE Healthcare, who met with experts specialising in magnet technology. Frida Tibblin Citron, Knowledge Transfer Officer (KTO), highlighted the value of being on-site:

“It’s incredibly important for companies to have the opportunity to meet representatives from FAIR in person. Being on-site allows for meaningful discussions and a better understanding of the work being done.”

The advantage of meeting in person

The visit featured a tour of the worksite, and Fredrik Engelmark, Sweden’s Industrial Liaison Officer (ILO) for FAIR and GSI, summarised:

“Visiting FAIR and GSI and engaging directly with key stakeholders has been incredibly valuable. The facilities’ cutting-edge research and advanced technology provide excellent opportunities for collaboration. Swedish industry possesses the expertise and innovation needed to contribute to both ongoing projects and future developments.”

Thank you, FAIR and GSI, for taking such good care of us!
